Sugar reduction is not only top of mind for many consumers, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as well. In January, the FDA proposed a front-of-package (FOP) nutrition label for most packaged foods. 

“No sugar tonight in my coffee. No sugar tonight in my tea. No sugar to stand beside me. No sugar to run with me.”

Consumer demand for healthier beverages is not going away. Gut tolerability, the usage of prebiotic fibers and reduced-sugar options are expanding the usage of sweetener solutions that will reduce calories in yogurts, for example, while providing functional benefits.

According to the American Heart Association, American adults consume an average of 77 grams of sugar per day, more than three times the recommended amount for women (25 grams) and more than twice that recommended for men (32 grams). Excess sugar in the diet is associated with weight gain, diabetes, and other unwelcome health issues.

In 2021, 72% of consumers were trying to limit or avoid sugar entirely, according to a survey by the International Food Information Council (IFIC). Consuming less sugar will likely remain a key consumer goal in 2022.
